Recently, Walmart has made changes to Seller Center that makes it easier for new sellers to join the Online Marketplace.
New Sellers are no longer being prompted to “Request to Sell”, but instead, to “Join Marketplace”. Let’s discuss what this means for New Sellers and for the future Walmart’s Seller Central platform.
What changed for new sellers?
Previously, Sellers interested in joining Seller Center were required to go through a lengthy approval process which could take up to weeks or months just to open a selling account. Now, new Sellers are getting approved after providing a few basic criteria including Business names and Contact Details.
How does the application process compare to the old one?
Before, sellers had to provide a long list of criteria, including catalog size and sales revenue in order to apply and then wait up to months for a response from Walmart on whether they have been approved. Now, selling on Walmart is a lot more accessible to new sellers. It's easier to get your products on Walmart.com than ever before.
How does this change impact the future of Walmart's online marketplace?
It’s no secret that Walmart strives for a bigger share of online sales. With Amazon accounting for roughly 40% of all online purchases, and Walmart only getting around 7% - Walmart needs to make some changes if they want a bigger stake. One way to do this is to encourage more sellers to join Seller Center, which they have done by removing the approval process entirely.
